characters such as Hannibal Lecter of The Silence of the Lambs or Dr. Samantha Waters from The Profiler. While television and movies have raised awareness of crime profiling as a profession, as with most careers it’s important to separate fact from fiction.
The notion of a brilliant but deranged psychiatrist and murderer who spends his time in prison assisting rookie FBI agents on major cases is intriguing, but reality TV it’s not. Nonetheless, a career as a criminal profiler can be a tremendously fascinating and intellectually stimulating pursuit.

Education And Skill Requirements

Criminal profiling is one of many professions within the field of forensic psychology. Profilers undergo extensive education and training, as well as years of experience investigating violent crimes.. A successful profiler will need to have, at a minimum, a master’s degree.
Criminal Profiler Job Description
Essentially, the criminal profiler’s job is to create a psychological profile of a criminal suspect, which can then be used to help catch the suspect. This is done by examining evidence from the crime, interviewing witnesses and victims, and analyzing crime scenes. Information gleaned from these investigations can then be used to help the profiler determine a pattern of criminal behavior, which hopefully can be used to find out more about the suspect (and potentially help to catch him or her). Aside from developing profiles of real-world criminals, criminal profilers may also conduct research and write reports on patterns of criminal behavior by going through old case studies and interviewing convicted criminals.
